TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vatican reported that Pope Francis's condition is deteriorating. This was announced on Saturday, February 22, 2025. The Pope's condition has become critical, requiring oxygen supplements and a blood transfusion.

His weakened condition has prevented him from leading mass for the public. On Sunday, February 23, 2025, it was the second time he did not attend due to health reasons.

Pope Francis was taken to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, due to shortness of breath. He underwent an examination and was diagnosed with double pneumonia.

This disease can be transmitted through contact with viruses or airborne droplets. It is a condition where both lungs are infected with bacteria or viruses, causing inflammation in the air sacs containing fluid or pus.

Nevertheless, Pope Francis keeps supporting Palestinians in Gaza faithfully. As reported by NPR, from the hospital bed, the Pope communicated with Catholics in Gaza through video calls and text messages.

Father Gabriel Romanelli, a parish priest of the Holy Family Church, the only Roman Catholic church in Gaza, said in an interview that Pope Francis calls from the hospital at eight o'clock, Gaza time, every night.

Almost every day, the Pope maintains contact with the Roman Catholic Church in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war that began in October 2023. "The Holy Father called us the first two days of hospitalization, people were waiting at 8 p.m. Gaza time as always. Although we had a blackout in the whole area of Gaza City, he insisted and managed to contact us with a video-call," Gabriel said as reported by Vatican News on February 17, 2025.

Before this, on Monday, October 7, 2024, the Pope criticized the "shameful inability" of the international community to end the war in the Middle East. At that time, the Pope sent an open letter to the Catholic community in Gaza.

"I am with you, the people of Gaza, who have long been besieged and are in distress. You are in my thoughts and prayers every day," he wrote.

"I am with you, who have been forced to leave your homes, leave school and work, and seek refuge from the bombing ... I am with you, who are afraid to look up for fear of the rain of fire from the sky," he added.

Thus, Pope Francis remains steadfast in supporting the people of Gaza.
