TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations on Monday, May 4, 2026, warned that one in five amputees in the Gaza Strip is a child. The lack of prosthetic specialists and restrictions on material entry to the Gaza Strip has led to thousands without adequate care.
The UN, as reported by Anadolu, expressed concerns about children in the Gaza Strip being affected by various medical issues. "On health, concerns remain over skin diseases and other medical issues linked to the presence of pests and rodents," it stated.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric added that more than 6,600 people require prosthetic care and rehabilitation. "That includes thousands of people who have received amputations since October 2023, yet only eight prosthetic technicians are available to respond," he said.
He also warned that with a shortage of specialists and limited prosthetic supply, it would take five years or more to meet the current needs.
He emphasized that "international prosthetic technicians are urgently needed, as well as the unimpeded entry of prosthetic materials, which remain restricted by the Israeli authorities."
Israel has imposed a blockade that has crippled the Gaza Strip since 2007, causing 2.4 million inhabitants of the area to be on the brink of famine.
Israel has carried out brutal attacks on Gaza for two years since October 2023. Israel's genocide has killed more than 72,000 Palestinian citizens and injured over 172,000 people. The attacks have also caused the destruction of the besieged Gaza Strip.
Death Toll in Gaza Continues to Rise
According to Anadolu, the death toll in Gaza continues to rise, despite the ceasefire reaching 72,612 people since October 2023. Meanwhile, the Gaza Ministry of Health also reported a total of 172,457 residents injured since the start of the initial attack.
Since the ceasefire was implemented on October 10, 2025, 832 people have been killed and 2,345 others injured due to Israeli attacks.
In addition, 767 bodies have been found under the rubble of buildings. Authorities in Gaza also believe that there are still thousands of victims who have not been evacuated from the ruins.
Furthermore, recent Israeli attacks targeted several areas in the enclave, including Atatira, Beit Lahiya, and North Gaza. The attack in Atatira killed a 42-year-old man due to Israeli gunfire, and several others were injured.
Meanwhile, Israeli drone attacks in the Bureij Refugee Camp in Central Gaza and the 10th Street area in Gaza killed one person.
Furthermore, the Israeli Artillery Corps reportedly launched consecutive attacks on several points in East Gaza, while Israeli tactical vehicles fired intensive shots in the eastern Khan Younis area.
EU's Stance on Palestine
The European Union, through its foreign relations spokesperson, Anouar Al Anouni, emphasized that they reject any territorial changes in Gaza. This is in line with the UN Security Council's resolution. Anouar stressed the importance of integrating the West Bank and Gaza under Palestinian authority and called for the acceleration of peace plan implementation.
The source added that the European Union urged Israel to immediately open unrestricted access to humanitarian aid into Gaza.
