2026 World Cup: Argentina Survive Swiss Scare, Set Up England Clash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Argentina secured their place in the semifinal of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time during the quarter-final match at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Under the leadership of Lionel Scaloni, the team initially took the lead through a goal from Alexis Mac Allister in the first half. However, Switzerland forced the game into extra time after Dan Ndoye equalized. In the extra time, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scored to lead the defending champions to the final four.

Argentina took the initiative from the beginning of the match. Their advantage came in the 10th minute through a set-piece situation. Lionel Messi sent a corner kick, which was met with a header by Alexis Mac Allister. The ball couldn't be stopped by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, and Argentina led 1-0.

Switzerland tried to respond through Breel Embolo. The forward fell in the penalty box in the 31st minute, but the referee, Joao Pinheiro, dismissed the suspicion of a foul. Embolo then received a yellow card in the 44th minute after committing a harsh foul. The score remained 1-0 in favor of Argentina at halftime.

Entering the second half, Switzerland increased their attacking intensity. Emiliano Martinez saved Argentina in the 65th minute by thwarting Dan Ndoye's close-range header.

However, two minutes later, Ndoye finally managed to score against Argentina. Taking advantage of Ricardo Rodriguez's pass inside the penalty box, he unleashed a low shot to the bottom right corner of the goal to equalize the score 1-1 in the 67th minute.

The match was then marked by an incident involving Embolo. The referee reviewed the VAR footage in the 70th minute to check a harsh foul committed by the Swiss striker. After initially being given a yellow card, the decision was changed to a second yellow card in the 72nd minute, causing Embolo to leave the field early, and Switzerland played with 10 men.

Although having a numerical advantage, Argentina failed to capitalize on opportunities until normal time ended. The best chance came in injury time when Lisandro Martinez's volley was still saved by Kobel. The score remained 1-1 until 90 minutes, leading the game into extra time.

Argentina lost a player due to injury at the beginning of the extra time. Enzo Fernandez was substituted out in the 91st minute, followed by Leandro Paredes who couldn't continue the match in the 110th minute.

Argentina's pressure eventually paid off in the 112th minute. Jose Lopez sent a short pass to Julian Alvarez who unleashed a powerful shot to the bottom right of the goal, beyond Kobel's reach. Argentina once again led 2-1.

As Switzerland tried to chase the deficit, Argentina secured the victory in injury time of the second half of extra time. A loose ball from a scramble fell to Lautaro Martinez outside the penalty box. The Inter Milan forward immediately unleashed a low shot to the bottom right corner of the goal in the 120+2nd minute, changing the score to 3-1.

In the 2026 World Cup semifinal, Argentina will face England, who also advanced after extra time by eliminating Norway.
