TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three Israeli soldiers were killed and two others wounded during an operation in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli military announced on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
According to the military statement, the soldiers were killed on Monday night when an explosive device detonated near their vehicle in the Jabalia area.
As reported by The Times of Israel, the deceased soldiers were Sergeant Lior Steinberg, 20, a combat medic; Sergeant Ofek Barhana, 20, a combat medic; and Sergeant Omer Van Gelder, 22, a squad leader.
This was the highest toll for the Israeli army since they resumed the offensive in Gaza after a broken ceasefire on March 18.
The troops were part of the Rotem Battalion of the Givati Brigade, the statement said. According to an initial IDF investigation, the five soldiers were in a Humvee in Jabalia, escorting a military fire engine entering Gaza to extinguish a burning armored personnel carrier due to technical issues.
Palestinian resistance fighters reportedly planted an explosive device that hit the vehicle carrying the five soldiers.
Along the same route, the Israeli military later found about 20 bombs prepared for detonation. It is unclear why the other bombs did not explode.
The evacuation of the wounded soldiers became complicated and drawn-out, as the forces in the convoy realized they were in an area filled with explosive device traps. The Israeli military also carried out a number of attacks in the area to facilitate the rescue.
The deaths come amid the ongoing Israeli offensive throughout Gaza, which began in October 2023. Despite increasing international pressure for a ceasefire, Israel continues the genocidal war that has killed nearly 54,500 Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom are women and children.
