5 Civilians Killed as US Attacks Iran-Bound Cargo Boats

1 hour ago 10

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States military has fired shots at two civilian cargo ships from Khasab, Oman, to Iran. This attack has resulted in the death of five people, according to Iran's Tasnim News Agency as reported by Antara, Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

“Following the false claim by the US military that it had targeted 6 Iranian speedboats, since none of the IRGC combat vessels had been hit, an investigation was conducted into the nature of the claim from local sources,” the source said, referring to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as cited by Anadolu.

Five civilian passengers were killed in the attack, said the military source. They described it as a "hasty" move driven by US "fear" of IRGC fast boat operations.

On Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that Iran had fired on a US warship and commercial ships, prompting the US to return fire and destroy small Iranian boats.

However, Iran's state-run television, IRIB, cited a local senior military source who called America's statement false.

The report stated that the event was depicted by America as a successful operation against armed Iranian boats.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced Project Freedom, an operation to assist ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz to depart the area.

CENTCOM stated that US military support for the operation included guided missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned systems, and 15,000 military personnel. The military operation began on Monday morning, May 4.

IRIB later reported that the Iranian military prevented an American ship from passing through the Strait of Hormuz by striking a warship with two missiles. However, this claim by Iran was denied by CENTCOM.

Trump also threatened Iran with consequences of destruction if Tehran attempted to attack American ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliation from Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf simultaneous with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through the mediation of Pakistan, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was then extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.

Since April 13, the United States has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
