TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reportedly planning to change the naming scheme of all its operating systems, adopting a new format based on the year. This alteration is expected to be officially announced at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which commences on June 9, 2025.
Under this new system, Apple will no longer increment version numbers sequentially. Instead, operating system names will reflect the year, similar to the automotive industry where version numbers correspond to the model year.
Consequently, the next iOS update, previously anticipated as iOS 19, will now be named iOS 26. This change will extend to all other Apple operating systems, including iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
According to The Verge, this strategic move is an effort by Apple to simplify and standardize its previously inconsistent operating system version numbering. Currently, Apple's software versions utilize disparate numbers, such as iOS 18, watchOS 12, and visionOS 2.
In addition to the naming convention update, Apple is also expected to unveil a major design overhaul, drawing inspiration from the Vision Pro's visionOS interface. The WWDC 2025 event will kick off with a keynote session on June 9 at 1:00 PM ET (Eastern Time), or June 10 at 12:00 AM Jakarta time.
