TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian authorities have raided the headquarters of an international online gambling network at Hayam Wuruk Plaza Tower, West Jakarta. According to the police, gambling operators from Cambodia have moved to a number of countries, including Indonesia, after a sweeping crackdown by Cambodian authorities.
"But we have anticipated and predicted this," said Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, the Secretary of the National Central Bureau of Interpol Indonesia, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to Untung, the police have unveiled and detained transnational crimes across several regions in Indonesia, including Surabaya, Denpasar, and Batam.
Untung believed the eradication of transnational crimes such as online gambling and scams requires coordination between the Indonesian National Police and relevant ministries or agencies.
Besides Indonesia, Cambodian gambling operators have targeted other countries such as the Philippines, Timor Leste, and South Africa.
Untung said offers from former Indonesian gambling operators who worked in Cambodia became one of the contributing factors to this headquarter shift.
During the raid at Hayam Wuruk Tower, the police apprehended 321 foreign nationals from various countries operating 75 online gambling sites.
The online gambling operators were active on the 20th and 21st floors of the building, and some even resided in the vicinity of the Hayam Wuruk Tower Plaza. "Some of them came here specifically to work as online gambling [operators]," said Wira.
The online gambling operation had been running for about two months, according to the police. A hotel and an apartment complex can be seen located next to the office, a relatively secluded establishment with a construction site at the front.
The police are still tracing the sponsors of these online gambling operators. According to Wira, the 321 individuals arrested today fulfilled roles such as operators, telemarketers, finance personnel, and coordinators.
Wira claimed foreign nationals made up the majority of the online gambling operation, based on examination of the evidence obtained from the telemarketing of these gambling sites.
The hundreds of foreigners are charged under Article 426 and/or Article 607 in conjunction with Article 20 and/or Article 21 of Law Number 1 of 2023 regarding the Criminal Code and Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning criminal adjustments.
