TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Aston Villa defeated Club Brugge 3-2 in a Champions League league-phase match at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges on Tuesday night, local time.
According to UEFA records as cited by Antara, Aston Villa secured the victory thanks to goals scored by John McGinn, Emiliano Buendia, and Nicolas Jackson.
Meanwhile, Club Brugge managed to equalize through Hugo Vetlesen and later narrowed the deficit via a penalty kick from Nicolo Tresoldi.
The win propelled Aston Villa to the top of the Champions League league-phase standings with three points, while Club Brugge sits in 35th place with zero points from one match.
Villa took the initiative early on and grabbed an early lead in the 11th minute through a goal by John McGinn, making it 1-0.
Brugge equalized in the 19th minute when a pass from Jan Virgili was converted into a goal by Hugo Vetlesen, bringing the score level at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, Villa regained the lead, making it 2-1 in the 22nd minute with a goal from Emiliano Buendia, who capitalized on a pass from Joao Gomes.
Towards the end of the first half, Pau Torres provided the assist for Nicolas Jackson to score, extending the lead to 3-1 in the 43rd minute.
In the second half, Villa once again took the attacking initiative, though several attempts failed to yield further goals.
Brugge managed to narrow the gap to 2-3 in the 61st minute when Nicolo Tresoldi converted a penalty that Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was unable to stop.
In the remaining time, Brugge pushed to at least equalize, but the 3-2 scoreline in favor of Unai Emery's squad held firm until the final whistle.
