TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned lender Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) has completed the return of funds to customers of the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union in North Sumatra, totaling Rp28.26 billion (around US$1.8 million).
BNI Director of Human Capital and Compliance Munadi Herlambang said the bank transferred Rp21.26 billion to the credit union, completing an earlier repayment of Rp7 billion.
“With this, the total funds returned have reached Rp28.26 billion, and the reimbursement process is now complete,” Munadi said in a statement on Wednesday.
BNI also apologized to the public, particularly the Catholic community and members of the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union, for the disruption and concern caused by the incident, referring to the alleged misappropriation of customer funds by a bank employee.
“We understand the concerns and the impact felt by those affected. With the completion of this refund, we hope public trust can be maintained, and that this serves as a lesson for all parties,” he said.
The bank expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of all stakeholders throughout the process, describing the resolution as a joint effort to address the issue properly.
“Our focus has been to ensure a smooth resolution and provide certainty for all parties involved,” Munadi added.
According to BNI, the settlement was completed ahead of schedule. The refund had initially been targeted for completion by Friday, April 24, but was finalized earlier on Wednesday, April 22.
“BNI remains committed to delivering the best services to the Indonesian public,” he said.
Earlier, BNI President Director Putrama Wahju Setyawan had assured that the funds—allegedly misappropriated by a bank employee—would be returned on April 22. He made the statement following a meeting with Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the parliament complex in Jakarta, which was also attended by the credit union’s treasurer, Sister Natalia Situmorang.
Putrama said a solution had been reached with the credit union to expedite the repayment process.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) had urged BNI to swiftly resolve the case. The regulator summoned the bank’s board and management to seek clarification and stressed that the resolution must be carried out quickly, thoroughly, transparently, and responsibly.
OJK also instructed the bank to conduct a comprehensive internal investigation, including reviews of compliance, internal controls, and corporate governance.
