TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Everton twice came from behind to hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw in Matchweek 3 of the 2026/27 Premier League season at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles scoring a stunning stoppage-time equalizer to deny the visitors victory.
According to BBC Sport, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko put Manchester United ahead, but Tyrique George and Maitland-Niles struck for Everton to secure a point in a dramatic finish.
The result leaves Manchester United 11th in the Premier League with four points from three matches, while Everton sit eighth with five points, according to the official Premier League website as cited by Antara.
United started brightly and nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Bruno Fernandes fired a first-time effort from the edge of the penalty area that struck the crossbar.
Fernandes' effort was United's 24th shot to hit the woodwork since the start of last season, more than any other Premier League side during that period.
Manchester United continued to threaten, with Youri Tielemans testing Jordan Pickford from distance in the 18th minute and Matheus Cunha sending an effort over the crossbar four minutes later.
Everton grew into the match as halftime approached. Thierno Barry headed over from Merlin Rohl's cross in the 43rd minute before Jarrad Branthwaite forced a save from United goalkeeper Senne Lammens in first-half stoppage time.
United finally broke the deadlock just after halftime. In the 46th minute, Mbeumo collected the ball from Kobbie Mainoo before curling a powerful effort from outside the box into the bottom-left corner of Pickford's goal.
The goal was Mbeumo's second of the season and put Manchester United 1-0 ahead.
Everton responded by increasing the pressure. Brennan Johnson had an effort blocked in the 58th minute, while Lammens denied Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall twice as the hosts searched for an equalizer.
Their persistence paid off in the 83rd minute. Hayden Hackney set up George inside the penalty area, and the Everton forward fired into the top-right corner to level the score at 1-1.
Manchester United regained the lead just six minutes later. Luke Shaw delivered a lofted cross into the penalty area, where Sesko rose to head the ball past Pickford and make it 2-1.
The visitors appeared to have secured all three points, but Everton produced a dramatic late response.
In the sixth minute of added time, Maitland-Niles collected a rebound before curling a spectacular effort into the top-left corner, leaving Lammens with no chance and sending the home supporters into celebration.
The goal marked Maitland-Niles' first Premier League strike since December 2019 and came just days after he joined Everton from Lyon on transfer deadline day.
As reported by the BBC, the former Arsenal full-back's late strike capped a turbulent week for Everton, who had lost Iliman N'Diaye to Manchester City and Beto during the transfer window while also seeing a late move for Folarin Balogun collapse.
Despite their limited squad options, David Moyes' side maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Everton are among seven teams yet to lose after three matches.
Manchester United, meanwhile, were left to rue another defensive lapse after twice surrendering the lead. BBC Sport noted that United have now conceded at least two goals in each of their opening three league matches for the first time in five years.
United's attack has shown considerable threat, with Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha among their attacking options, but defensive problems have prevented Michael Carrick's side from converting those chances into victories.
The 2-2 draw means Manchester United have collected four points from their opening three matches, while Everton move to five points.
