TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Posts on X [archived] and YouTube claim that all volcanoes in Indonesia are simultaneously active due to an unusual underground phenomenon.
These accounts included visual footage of volcanic activity without citing official sources. "There is unusual underground movement in Indonesia! All dormant volcanoes and their surroundings have become active again," wrote the Turkish-language account on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
Is it true that all volcanoes in Indonesia are erupting simultaneously?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the content through interviews with relevant authorities and references to credible sources. The findings indicate that not all volcanoes in Indonesia erupted in early September 2026.
Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, Head of the Volcano Observation Team at the PVMBG, emphasized that the visuals circulated by these accounts do not depict actual volcanic activity.

Tempo compared the visuals with the website magma.esdm.go.id on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The volcano information map indicated that only four volcanoes were erupting: Mount Anak Krakatau, Mount Semeru, Mount Lewotolok, and Mount Ibu. Erupting volcanoes are marked with an icon showing a volcano emitting fire.
“The volcanoes shown with fire are the ones currently erupting,” Tyas told Tempo on Monday, September 7, 2026. Meanwhile, the visuals circulating on social media lacked a clear date, scale, or source.
Why Are Several Volcanoes Erupting Simultaneously?
While several volcanoes in Indonesia have indeed been reported to erupt simultaneously, Tyas explained that this is a normal phenomenon. Geological conditions, tectonic locations, and the age of the volcanoes result in distinct magma chambers that are not interconnected.
“Each volcano has its own system and characteristics regarding magma conduits or magma chambers. Even if they erupt during the same period, there is no link between them,” Tyas said.
Citing a report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there is no evidence to suggest that an eruption at one volcano can trigger an eruption at another volcano located hundreds of kilometers away or on a different continent.
CONCLUSION
The narrative claiming that all volcanoes in Indonesia are erupting simultaneously is false.
