TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Religious Affairs reports that the number of Indonesian hajj pilgrims who passed away in Medina, Saudi Arabia, rose to seven on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The two most recent deaths were Siti Sri Rahayu Sanusi from the SOC-12 group (Pekalongan Regency) and Endar Jaya Purwadi from the BPN-01 group (Samarinda City).
The Ministry's Head of Public Relations, Mohammad Hasan Afandi, expressed the government's condolences over the loss. "May the deceased and their families be granted patience," Hasan said in a press release on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The five pilgrims who previously passed away were Nursidah (58) from Gowa Regency, Kamariah Dul Tayib (85) from Surabaya, and Rodiah (68) from Solo, Central Java. The others were Tukiman (51) from Bengkulu and Dawanus Mahmud Muhammad Hasim (51) from Batam.
Hasan stated that the number of pilgrims falling ill upon arrival in the Holy Land continues to climb. According to health reports in Medina on May 2, 2026, a total of 5,576 pilgrims received outpatient treatment. This figure represents a sharp increase from 4,246 pilgrims recorded on May 1, 2026.
Hasan also noted that 105 pilgrims were referred to the Indonesian Hajj Health Clinic (KKHI) and 125 others to Saudi Arabian hospitals. "Currently, 39 pilgrims remain under hospital care," he said.
By the 12th day of hajj operations, the Ministry has recorded 175 groups, totaling 68,082 pilgrims and 697 officials, departing for Medina. Among them, 19 groups consisting of 7,387 pilgrims and 76 officials have arrived in Mecca to perform Umrah ahead of the hajj peak.
Hasan urged pilgrims to monitor their physical condition amid the high temperatures. Pilgrims were advised not to carry excessive luggage, manage their visits to Masjid Al-Haram wisely, drink more water, and immediately report to health officials if they feel unwell.
"Our focus is to ensure the protection of pilgrims, that hajj proceedings follow regulations, and that all services are conducted safely, professionally, and with care for the elderly, people with disabilities, and women," Hasan stated.
