Indonesia and Belarus Strengthen Economic Ties, Launch Business Council

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) of Indonesia-Belarus serves as a framework for bilateral cooperation, especially in trade, economy, and technical fields, with the aim of maximizing the benefits for the economic development of both countries.

Airlangga also expressed appreciation for Belarus' support for the finalization and signing of the Indonesia-EAEU FTA in December 2025 in St. Petersburg, Russia. "Indonesia views Belarus as a strategic partner in strengthening industrial cooperation, food security, and technology-based manufacturing development," he said in a written statement on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

According to Airlangga, the implementation of the Indonesia-EAEU FTA is expected to open up broader and mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities. He stated that Belarus has invited stakeholders and business actors from Indonesia to directly witness the capabilities of the agricultural industry, manufacturing, and various industrial facilities in the country.

The two countries also continue to discuss opportunities for industrial and technological cooperation, including plans for joint assembly machineries in Indonesia. An Indonesia-Belarus Business Forum is also planned to take place during the visit of the President of Belarus to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus, Viktor Karankevich, emphasized his country's commitment to strengthen economic partnership with Indonesia through the development of industrial cooperation, investments, agriculture, and trade connectivity.

He also mentioned that the establishment of the Indonesia-Belarus Business Council will help improve business relations between the two countries, following the signing of the Indonesia-EAEU FTA and the soon-to-be-completed ratification process.

In the field of trade and investment, both countries have seen a significant increase in the trade value, reaching approximately US$ 221 million, a 72.6 percent increase compared to the previous year. The Indonesian government has also identified several strategic cooperation opportunities in recent years.

As one of the countries in the Eastern European region with a strong manufacturing base, especially in the heavy equipment, agriculture, and chemical sectors, Belarus is seen to have strategic potential as Indonesia's partner in market diversification and industrial sector strengthening.

Indonesia is pushing for strengthened cooperation through joint ventures, local assembly, technology transfer, and increased national industrial capacity, especially in the heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery sectors.

In the food security and agriculture sector, the two countries discussed the potential for cooperation in agricultural mechanization and modern agricultural technology to support productivity and modernization of the sector.

Indonesia is open to increasing exports of flagship products such as rubber, cocoa, coffee, fishery products, and manufactured products to Belarus and the EAEU region. In addition, the two countries are discussing strengthening cooperation in investment, health, education, research, culture, sports, and tourism.

In the final discussion, both parties welcomed the preparation of the Roadmap of Developing Key Areas of Cooperation between Belarus and Indonesia for 2026-2030. The document is expected to be a systematic and measurable guideline for the development of cooperation, as well as one of the main achievements during the visit of the President of Belarus to Indonesia.
