Indonesia Issues Caution Following Covid-19 Surges in Neighboring States

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Health issues caution in response to Covid-19 outbreaks in neighboring Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. The ministry urges the heads of health offices, primary health centers, hospital directors, and the heads of the quarantine technical implementation units to remain alert to the potential surge of Covid-19 spread across Indonesia.

"This circular aims to increase vigilance towards Covid-19 and other potential extraordinary events or other outbreaks," reads the letter signed by the Acting Director General of Disease Prevention at the Ministry of Health, Murti Utami, on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Overall, the Ministry of Health instructs stakeholders to monitor the global situation on Covid-19 spread through official government channels and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the Ministry of Health, the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia follows a downward trend in the 20th week of 2025, with 3 confirmed cases, from 28 cases in the previous week, with the dominant MB.1.1 variant.

However, the Indonesian government stresses the importance for health offices and health service facilities to increase early awareness of the spread of Covid-19. "By monitoring and verifying trends in Influenza-Like Illness cases, Severe Acute Respiratory Infection, pneumonia, or Covid-19 through regular reporting in the early warning and response system (EWRS)," said Murti Utami.

The Ministry of Health also requests health offices and health service facilities to report potential extraordinary cases within less than 24 hours through the EWRS application. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health asks institutions to monitor Covid-19 specimen examinations through the All Record Tc-19 application.

Additionally, for Health Offices in cities and regencies across the country, the ministry requests the, to:

- Mobilize Rapid Response Teams (RRT) in detecting and responding to potential signals of an increase in Covid-19 cases.

- Coordinate with laboratories in taking Covid-19 case specimens according to standards

- Conduct epidemiological investigations if cases of respiratory infections or Covid-19 increase

- Improve the dissemination of Covid-19 transmission prevention information to the public

- Prepare healthcare facilities for handling Covid-19

- Implement risk mapping and the preparation of Covid-19 recommendations via https://petarisikopie.id/

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health mandates all healthcare workers in various institutions to maintain physical fitness and ensure the detection and response to Covid-19 findings according to applicable regulations.
