TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Bank Indonesia has officially launched the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) cross-border payment service between Indonesia and China on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Through this cooperation, Indonesians in China can make payment transactions using QRIS, and vice versa.

“This important achievement reflects the strong and continuously growing collaboration between Bank Indonesia and the central bank of China, as well as close partnerships with industry stakeholders from both countries,” Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said in a video message at the launch event in Beijing, as quoted from Antara.

According to her, during the sandboxing trial since August 17, 2025, with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), QRIS users recorded 1.64 million inbound transactions worth Rp556 billion, or around US$32.1 million.

Inbound transactions refer to payments made by Chinese users in Indonesia, while outbound transactions are made by Indonesians in China. Currently, QRIS transactions in China are limited to Alipay, while WeChat Pay and UnionPay are also widely used in China.

“Inbound transactions show strong demand, although participation is still limited to early users. Outbound transactions reached around 8,000, with a value of about Rp6.4 billion. We expect these numbers to continue growing after today’s soft launching,” Hendarta said.

The cross-border QRIS system enables fast, seamless, affordable, secure, and reliable transactions, while supporting tourism, small business participation, and people-to-people connectivity.

Bank Indonesia also emphasized its commitment to promoting local currency usage through the Local Currency Transaction Framework to improve efficiency and strengthen financial resilience.

The grand launching of this service will be held in Shanghai in upcoming June. The cross-border QRIS will involve 16 banks and 8 non-banking agencies in Indonesia, while for China, 19 institutions have committed to supporting the payment system.

Prior to China, BI had also launched QRIS usage in South Korea on April 1. Previously, QRIS was also implemented in Thailand since August 2022, Malaysia since May 2023, Singapore since November 2023, and Japan since August 2025.
