TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) stated that Indonesia's trade balance has shown positive performance amid global dynamics until March 2026. The cumulative trade surplus from January to March 2026 was US$5.55 billion. According to the Deputy of Statistics Distribution and Services at BPS, Ateng Hartono, since May 2020, Indonesia's trade balance has been in surplus for 71 consecutive months.
"The surplus is supported by the positive performance of non-oil and gas commodity trade, while oil and gas trade still experiences a deficit," he said at a press conference at the BPS office in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026.
He mentioned that the surplus of non-oil and gas commodities reached US$10.63 billion, while oil and gas commodities still experienced a deficit of US$5.08 billion. The cumulative export value for the period of January-March 2026 reached US$66.85 billion, an increase of 0.34 percent compared to the same period the previous year.
Additionally, Ateng stated that the manufacturing sector was the driving force behind the growth in export value, which increased by 3.96 percent to reach US$54.98 billion.
BPS also noted the three main export markets for Indonesia's non-oil and gas, namely China, the United States, and India. The contribution of these three countries accounts for about 44.48 percent of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports in January-March 2026.
China remains the main export market with a value of US$16.50 billion (25.94 percent), followed by the United States with US$7.29 billion (11.46 percent), and India with US$4.50 billion (7.08 percent).
Non-oil and gas exports to China in the period of January-March 2026 were dominated by iron and steel commodities, nickel and its derivatives, and mineral fuels. Meanwhile, exports to the United States were dominated by machinery and electrical equipment and parts, footwear, as well as knitted clothing and accessories.
