Iran Proposes New Framework for Strait of Hormuz

6 hours ago 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, has stated that the future of the Gulf region will unfold without the presence of the United States. The statement was conveyed in a written message released by his office to commemorate Persian Gulf National Day on Thursday, April 30.

According to Anadolu reports, Khamenei views the presence of foreign powers, especially the United States, as a source of instability. He also mentioned that a "new phase" in regional dynamics is emerging.

In the same statement, Khamenei emphasized that the Gulf is an essential part of regional identity and a major route for global economic connectivity. He highlighted the strategic role of the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman as vital passages for the global energy trade.

New Framework for the Strait of Hormuz

Khamenei stated that Iran will ensure regional security through a new management approach in the Strait of Hormuz, including the renewal of legal frameworks and governance. He believes that this approach will benefit the countries in the region. "These frameworks will bring stability, progress and economic benefits for all nations in the region," he said, emphasizing that the Gulf countries share a common destiny.

Citing the Middle East Monitor, Khamenei stated that external actors from "thousands of kilometers away" have no place in the region's future. The statement also alludes to the emergence of a "new regional order" formed by recent developments.

Escalation of Iran-US Conflict

Khamenei's statement comes amid escalating tensions following the war that began on February 28 between Iran, the United States, and Israel. The conflict briefly disrupted maritime routes and energy distribution through the Strait of Hormuz.

The ceasefire announced on April 8 remains in effect. Diplomatic efforts continue to reach a broader agreement, including discussions on maritime access and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has designated April 30 as Persian Gulf National Day since 2005, marking the expulsion of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz during the Safavid era. Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader on March 9, after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in an attack by the United States and Israel on February 28.
