Iran Sets One-Month Deadline for US Deal on Strait of Hormuz

1 hour ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The government of Iran has reportedly set a one-month deadline for the United States (US) to reach an agreement that includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the cessation of the naval blockade by Washington, and the permanent end of conflicts in Iran and Lebanon.

Axios reported that Tehran has submitted a revised proposal containing 14 points to the United States last Thursday. Two sources familiar with the document said the proposal outlines a strict one-month timeframe, comprising maritime access, cessation of the US naval blockade, and a long-term ceasefire in both conflict zones.

United States President Donald Trump responded cautiously to the proposal. "If they misbehave, if they do something bad — but right now, we'll see. It's a possibility that could happen, certainly," Trump told reporters when asked if he would order a new attack, as reported by Anadolu.

According to the same source, Iran's proposal also includes a second stage of negotiations that will only commence after an initial agreement is reached. This stage is intended to last for an additional month and will focus on the issue of Iran's nuclear program.

The day before, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal. However, he claimed that he would still look into it. "I'm looking at it. I'll let you know about it later," Trump said before departing from Palm Beach to Miami. "They told me about the concept of the deal. They're going to give me the exact wording now."

Nevertheless, shortly after, Trump expressed a stronger tone on the Truth Social social media platform. "can't imagine that it would be acceptable. Iran has not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years," wrote Trump.

In a separate statement to the media, Trump also described the blockade of Iranian ports as a "very friendly" and undisputed move, and assessed that the policy was not contrary to his claim that hostilities had ceased.

As of now, there is no certainty whether the proposal will form the basis of a new agreement, while tension between the two countries continues.
