Iran Turns Down US Nuclear Deal, Commits to Uranium Enrichment

1 day ago 19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated that Tehran will not halt uranium enrichment. On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, he rejected the U.S.'s major demand to resolve the nuclear dispute for decades. According to Khamenei, this is contrary to the interests of the Islamic Republic.

On Saturday, Oman delivered the U.S.'s proposal for a new nuclear deal to Iran. This proposal has mediated discussions between Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.

After five rounds of talks, some difficult issues remain unresolved, including Iran's insistence on maintaining uranium enrichment within its borders. Iran also refuses to send abroad its entire stockpile of highly enriched uranium. This enriched uranium is likely a raw material for nuclear bombs.

"Uranium enrichment is the key to our nuclear program and the enemies have focused on the enrichment," Khamenei said in a televised speech broadcast by Al Arabiya. He mentioned that the U.S. proposal contradicts Iran's belief in independence and the principle that they can.

"The rude and arrogant leaders of America repeatedly demand that we should not have a nuclear program. Who are you to decide whether Iran should have enrichment?" he questioned.

Tehran claims it seeks to master nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Iran has long denied Western countries' accusations that they are seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

On Monday, Reuters reported that Tehran is ready to reject the U.S. proposal because it is unacceptable. Iran failed to soften Washington's stance on uranium enrichment or to address Tehran's interests.

Trump has been pressuring Iran since returning to the White House in January 2025. Trump's measures include tightening sanctions and threats to bomb Iran if negotiations do not yield a deal.
