TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta is preparing to host a conference on museums through the International Council of Museums, Committee for Education and Cultural Action (ICOM-CECA) Annual Conference 2026, which will be held from November 9-14.
The Head of the Jakarta Culture Office, Mochamad Miftahulloh Tamary, said this marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time Indonesia has been entrusted to host the ICOM-CECA Annual Conference.
"This is proof that Jakarta is capable of serving as a cultural center and a hub for international cultural dialogue," he said in an online press conference on Thursday.
Miftahulloh said the endeavor is the result of an intensive approach, communication, and strategic discussions developed consistently over the past three years by the Jakarta Provincial Government, Musee ID, and ICOM-CECA.
This annual conference provides a forum for museum professionals from various countries to exchange knowledge and experiences to strengthen the role of museums in society.
A series of activities have been prepared, including plenary sessions and panel discussions at several iconic Jakarta museums, such as the Bank Indonesia Museum and the Fatahillah Museum, and a cultural visit to Onrust Archaeological Island, as part of an immersive experience of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage.
Miftahulloh projects that the event will bring together more than 200 museum professionals from over 50 countries.
Meanwhile, ICOM-CECA, a committee under the auspices of the International Council of Museums, was established in 1968 and focuses on developing museum education, cultural participation, and social transformation.
