TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Danish shipping and logistics company, Maersk, announced on Monday, May 4, 2026, that one of its commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz under the protection of the United States (US) military.
In a statement as reported by Anadolu, the company mentioned that the ALLIANCE FAIRFAX-a US-flagged roll-on/roll-off vessel operated by Farrell Lines, a subsidiary of Maersk Line-transited the Strait of Hormuz and exited the Persian Gulf on Monday.
“The transit was completed without incident, and all crew members are safe and unharmed,” the statement said.
It was noted that the vessel had been detained in the Gulf since the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28. The ship “was unable to depart due to ongoing security concerns.”
“Following the development and coordination of a comprehensive security plan with the U.S. military, MLL’s shore side and shipboard leadership approved the transit,” the statement added.
"Project Freedom"
US President Donald Trump stated that Washington would guide stranded ships in the Strait of Hormuz to safe havens-a campaign called "Project Freedom." This marks a potential challenge to Iran's blockade of the strategic waterway.
“The Ship movement is merely meant to free up people, companies, and Countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong – They are victims of circumstance,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday as reported by Al Jazeera, referring to it as a “humanitarian gesture”.
The US President stated that the campaign was carried out at the request of countries whose ships were still stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as “neutral and innocent bystanders”.
Trump added that US envoys were holding “positive” discussions with Iran but warned that any interference with the operation “have to be dealt with forcefully”. It remains unclear how the campaign will be executed, as Iran has warned ships not to enter the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional tensions escalated after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, killing thousands of civilians and the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This prompted retaliation from Tehran against Israel, as well as US allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through the mediation of Pakistan. However, talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was then indefinitely extended by Trump.
