TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has disrupted flight operations at several Indonesian airports, with volcanic ash affecting routes linking Jakarta, Makassar and Lombok.

According to Antara's report, at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Sunday, Sept. 6, 21 flights were affected by the volcanic activity. Twelve flights were canceled, while nine others were delayed.

A passenger traveling from Makassar to Jakarta, Nurlia, said she had been waiting for three hours for confirmation of her flight.

As reported by Antara, the disruption also affected flights at Lombok International Airport in West Nusa Tenggara, where eight flights on the Lombok-Jakarta and Jakarta-Lombok routes were canceled because of volcanic ash from the Anak Krakatau eruption.

Eight Lombok-Jakarta Flights Canceled

Aidhil Philip Julian, general manager of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia at Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport in Central Lombok, said eight flights had been canceled because of the volcanic ash.

"There are eight flights affected by volcanic ash from Mount Krakatau that have been cancelled," Aidhil said on Sunday, September 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He urged prospective passengers to monitor the latest flight information provided by their airlines as ash from the eruption continued to affect aviation operations.

The canceled flights included four departures from Lombok to Jakarta and four arrivals from Jakarta to Lombok.

The affected departures from Lombok were:

- TransNusa 8B 5162, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time)

- Super Air Jet IU 769, scheduled for 6:15 a.m. WITA

- Garuda Indonesia GA 431, scheduled for 11:15 a.m. WITA

- Citilink Indonesia QG 641, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. WITA

The affected arrivals from Jakarta were:

- TransNusa 8B 5161, scheduled for 8 a.m. WITA

- Super Air Jet IU 762, scheduled for 10 a.m. WITA

- Garuda Indonesia GA 432, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. WITA

- Citilink Indonesia QG 640, scheduled for noon WITA

Aidhil said operations at Lombok International Airport remained normal, although passengers were advised to check their flight status regularly.

Soekarno-Hatta Closure Disrupts Flights

The cancellations followed the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, as volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau was detected in the airport area.

According to Antara, the airport's operational suspension was extended to 1:30 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on Sunday under NOTAM A3341/26 after earlier closures were extended because volcanic ash remained present.

The closure affected flight operations and had knock-on effects on schedules at other airports. Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in Jakarta and Radin Inten II International Airport in Lampung also implemented temporary airport closures at different times because of indications of volcanic ash in the airspace.

At Radin Inten II, several flights between Lampung and Jakarta were canceled after volcanic ash entered flight paths. The airport also reported delays affecting several other flights.

Passengers whose flights were affected received updates from airport and airline customer service teams and were offered options to request refunds or reschedule their flights.

"Airport users are advised to regularly check their flight status via official airline channels and may also contact the Angkasa Pura Indonesia Contact Center at 172 for the latest information," Aidhil said.

The disruptions come as authorities intensify monitoring of volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau. BMKG said satellite analysis on Sunday identified two ash clusters extending across Banten, Jakarta, West Java and Bengkulu, with ash moving in different directions at different altitudes.
