TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - By the last day of April, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is less than a week away from taking center stage worldwide. As one of the tournament's host cities, New York City (NYC) is far from being a mere bystander.
Beyond the live action at MetLife Stadium, city and state officials have unveiled a lineup of free, official fan events across all five boroughs. This initiative ensures fans can soak up the thrill of the tournament in the most accessible way possible, especially considering that a round-trip train ticket to the stadium alone can cost $150.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined the FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee to announce the citywide plan, which includes giant match screenings, live entertainment, and cultural programming at parks and public spaces from June through July.
The announcement was made on April 27. Taking to the podium, Governor Kathy Hochul set the tone, "If you can't get to the World Cup, the World Cup is coming to you.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani followed with a more personal touch, reflecting, “When I think back on my first World Cup, some of my most meaningful memories weren't in the stadium — they were in the fan zones, surrounded by thousands of people brought together by a pure love of the game. That's what we're building here: a World Cup that belongs to New Yorkers."
As Time Out reported, the state has committed $20 million to World Cup programming. Officials are also working to expand outdoor event permits for bars and restaurants, alongside temporary extensions to operating hours so fans can legally stay for late-night matches.

Venue: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (Flushing Meadows)

What to Expect: Daily match screenings and entertainment, serving as the primary hub for the tournament's early stages.
2. Brooklyn
Venue: Brooklyn Bridge Park (Emily Roebling Plaza)
Schedule: June 13 – July 19
What to Expect: The longest-running fan zone featuring daily match broadcasts and waterfront views.
3. The Bronx
Venue: Bronx Terminal Market
Schedule: June 13 – 14
What to Expect: Match screenings and local cultural programming.
4. Staten Island
Venue: Staten Island University Hospital Community Park
Schedule: June 29 – July 2
What to Expect: Evening match programming with a newly installed LED scoreboard.
5. Manhattan
Venue: Rockefeller Center
