TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto claimed that Indonesia is increasingly being respected among the Southeast Asian Nations Association (ASEAN). According to Prabowo, this is due to food self-sufficiency.
Prabowo expressed his view during his visit to Gorontalo after returning from the 48th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines. "We have just returned from the Philippines after attending the ASEAN Summit. We are highly respected because we are now self-sufficient in food," said Prabowo as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
Prabowo gave examples of several types of food that he claimed have reached self-sufficiency, including rice and corn. "We have achieved self-sufficiency in many food products. We no longer need to import food from abroad," said the Chair of the Gerindra Party.
The former defense minister stated that Indonesia must stand on its own feet. Therefore, he wants his government to achieve food and energy self-sufficiency.
Prior to visiting Gorontalo, Prabowo first visited Miangas Island. This visit followed his attendance at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines.
Miangas is the closest island to the border of Indonesia and the Philippines, located in the Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. Prabowo landed at Miangas Airport on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at around 10:45 AM WITA (Central Indonesian Time). The Chair of the Gerindra Party was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Prabowo arrived in Miangas directly from the Philippines. "He returned to the homeland today, but before heading to Jakarta, he made a stop at several agendas there (Miangas)," said Sugiono as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
