The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaks April 22, Visible Across Night Sky
The Lyrid meteor shower phenomenon is set to reach its peak on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, with relatively dark skies, free from the interference of moonlight. This event is one of the most eagerly anticipated sky phenomena in spring.
As one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, the Lyrids offer observers the chance to witness "shooting stars" and potentially bright "fireballs" in the dark night sky.
The phenomenon runs from April 14 to 30, with its peak intensity expected on April 22. During this peak period, the visible meteor count is estimated to reach around 10 to 20 per hour, providing opportunities for observation both before dawn and after sunset.
The optimal viewing conditions are anticipated to occur in the early hours, particularly around 05:00 AM, when the radiant point in the Lyra constellation is higher in the sky.
2. Tsunami Threat Eases After Powerful 7.7 Earthquake in Japan
A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.7 struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday afternoon, triggering tsunami warnings and widespread precautionary measures across the region. The tremor, which hit at a depth of around 20 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean near Iwate, caused strong shaking that made it difficult for people to stand in some areas and was felt as far as Tokyo.
Authorities initially warned of tsunami waves reaching up to three meters, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 172,000 residents across coastal areas from Hokkaido to Chiba. Within two hours, waves of up to 80 centimeters were recorded at several ports, including Kuji and Miyako in Iwate Prefecture. The warning was later downgraded to an advisory as the immediate threat eased, as reported by Reuters.
Several towns with memories of the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, such as Otsuchi and Kamaishi, swiftly ordered evacuations. Public broadcasts repeatedly urged residents to move to higher ground, reinforcing lessons from past disasters.
3. Indonesia to Build Giant Sea Wall in Phases from Northern Java Coast
The Indonesian government has affirmed that the giant sea wall project will be implemented in stages, with the initial phase prioritized along the northern coast of Java.
Head of the North Java Coastal Area Authority and Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Didit Herdiawan Ashaf said the project remains in the planning phase.
“We will further examine activities related to the construction,” Didit said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday, April 20, 2026.
According to Didit, the government has not yet set a specific timeline for the start of construction. However, he indicated that the process could be accelerated. “The construction target has not been determined, but it can be expedited,” he said.
He added that the government is still conducting detailed studies on technical and implementation aspects before moving forward. “The timing is still being calculated because it is closely linked to the availability of resources,” he said.
