TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Just months after the Eid al-Fitr festivities, UAE residents are preparing for another important celebration on the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Adha. The long weekend that follows is as appealing as ever.
Observed by Muslims around the world, Eid holidays are often marked by multiple days of rest. In the UAE, the celebration is further elevated by the inclusion of Arafah Day, seamlessly extending the break and offering office workers a longer, well-timed pause to gather, travel, and celebrate.
Much like other significant Islamic observances, Eid al-Adha is determined by the Islamic Hijri calendar, with its exact beginning shaped by the lunar cycle and ultimately confirmed through the official sighting of the crescent moon.
While this time-honoured practice upholds its spiritual significance, astronomical projections provide an early indication of its arrival. In 2026, Eid al-Adha is expected to begin on Wednesday, May 27, ushering in a meaningful period of reflection and celebration.
The celebration is ushered in by the Day of Arafah on Tuesday, May 26, widely regarded as the most significant day of the Hajj pilgrimage. These anticipated dates have been outlined by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society as per Gulf News.
In the UAE, the arrival of Arafah Day is also observed as a dedicated public holiday. This year, the UAE Cabinet has confirmed a three-day holiday for Eid al-Adha, running from Wednesday, May 27, to Friday, May 29. The break coincides neatly with the following weekend, expanding into six days and allowing residents a valuable opportunity to rest, reconnect, and enjoy the festivities.
