Ukraine to Send Delegation to Istanbul for Talks with Russia

1 day ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine will send a delegation to Istanbul, Turkey for a new round of direct peace talks with Russia on Monday, June 2, 2025, said President Volodymyr Zelensky.

As reported by Arab News, this was revealed by Zelensky despite Russia's missile attacks on Ukraine that killed 12 soldiers and the largest drone attack in the three-year war.

In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky said on Sunday that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will lead Ukraine's delegation. "We are doing everything to protect our independence, country, and people," Zelensky said.

Ukrainian officials had previously asked the Kremlin to provide the promised memorandum, which would outline its position to end the war before the meeting took place. Moscow said it would share its memorandum during the negotiations.

Russia launched its largest swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion three years ago, the Ukrainian air force said on Sunday. They said 472 drones were launched over Ukraine.

Russian forces also launched seven missiles simultaneously with a series of drone attacks, said Yuriy Ignat, head of the Ukrainian Air Force's communication. Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian military said at least 12 Ukrainian military personnel were killed and more than 60 others injured in a Russian missile attack on a military training unit.

The attack occurred at 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, the statement said, emphasizing that there were no formations or mass gatherings of personnel at that time. An investigation commission was formed to uncover the circumstances around the attack that resulted in the loss of many personnel, the statement said.

The training unit is located behind the active front line spanning 1,000 kilometers, where Russian reconnaissance and attack aircraft can strike.

Ukrainian forces suffer from a shortage of manpower and take extra precautions to avoid mass gatherings as the skies on the front lines are filled with Russian drones seeking targets.

"If it is established that the actions or inaction of officials led to the deaths or injuries of soldiers, those responsible will be strictly held accountable," the Ukrainian Army statement said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks were reported in Russian territory on Sunday, including in the Siberian region of Irkutsk, more than 4,500 kilometers east of Moscow.

This was the first time Ukrainian drones were seen in the region, said the local Governor, Igor Kobzev, stressing that the drones posed no threat to civilians.

Other drone attacks were also reported in the Ryazan region of Russia and the Arctic region of Murmansk. No casualties were reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that they had seized the village of Oleksiivka in the Sumy region in northern Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities in Sumy ordered mandatory evacuations in 11 other settlements on Saturday as Russian forces continued to advance in the region.

Speaking on Saturday, Ukrainian military head, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that Russian forces were focusing their main offensive efforts on Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Lyman in the Donetsk region, as well as the border areas of Sumy.
