TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has highlighted the injured and killed Palestinians in Gaza while seeking aid. According to Guterres, the Palestinian people should not have to risk their lives just to get food.
"I am appalled by the reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza yesterday," said Guterres, Monday, June 2, 2025, quoted from the UN official release.
Guterres has called for further investigation of this case. He demands justice for the incident.
"I call for an immediate and independent investigation into these events and for perpetrators to be held accountable," he said.
Guterres stated that Israel is obligated to approve and facilitate humanitarian aid. He explained that access to large-scale aid in Gaza must be restored without hindrance to meet urgent needs.
"The UN must be allowed to work in safety and security under conditions of full respect of humanitarian principles," he said.
Furthermore, Guterres called again for the immediate implementation of a permanent and sustainable ceasefire. He also called for the unconditional release of all hostages.
"This is the only path to ensuring security for all. There is no military solution to the conflict," he said.
As reported by CNA, the Gaza Civil Defense Agency reported that Israeli gunfire killed at least 31 people and injured 176 others near an aid distribution site in the southern city of Rafah on Sunday. Medical officials at the nearest hospital also reported a large number of gunshot victims.
The Israeli military denied shooting people "while they were near or inside" the location. However, Israeli military sources admitted that "warning shots were fired towards several suspects" about a kilometer away last night.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry called Guterres' statement "shameful." They blamed Guterres for not criticizing Hamas.
The Israeli government has been cooperating with the group managing the site, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), to introduce new mechanisms for aid distribution in Gaza.
The UN has refused to cooperate with the group due to concerns about neutrality and its system being inconsistent with humanitarian principles.
