TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Pangalengan area in Bandung Regency, West Java, was shaken by dozens of earthquakes throughout the day, at least until Thursday morning, September 17, 2026. Over 24 hours, until 07.00 a.m. local time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 47 tremors.
Ana Oktavia Setiowati, the acting head of the BMKG Region II Office, said that the latest tremor felt by residents occurred at 6:21 a.m. local time on Thursday, with a magnitude of 2.7. The epicenter was located at a depth of 4 kilometers. “It was at a distance of 27 kilometers to the south of Bandung Regency,” Ana said in a written statement.
Referring to BMKG records, the recent shallow earthquake tremor in Pangalengan had an intensity of MMI III. The same earthquake was also felt in Talegong and Cisewu, both in Garut Regency. The tremors were felt inside homes as though a truck were passing by.
There was also a shallow land earthquake measuring M2.6 in the early hours of this morning, located 23 kilometers south of Bandung Regency. Its depth was only 3 kilometers. Based on the tremor scale map, the tremors in the Pangalengan and Kertasari areas had an intensity of MMI III.
Since early Wednesday, September 16, 2026, a series of tectonic earthquakes with small magnitudes, ranging from M2 to M3, have occurred several times in Bandung Regency. Two earthquake epicenters were also only one kilometer apart. The average tremor was around MMI III or lower.
“All of these earthquakes originated from the active fault around Bandung Regency,” said the Head of the BMKG Bandung Geophysics Station, Suaidi Ahadi, to Tempo, on Wednesday night.
