TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 118 earthquakes in Bandung Regency and nearby regions from August 11 to September 17, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. local.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto said in Bandung on Thursday that the tremors had magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 3.4, with 13 of them felt by the public.

"A total of 118 earthquakes were recorded with magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 3.4, and 13 of them were felt in Pangalengan, Talegong, Cisewu, and the surrounding areas," Wijayanto said.

The earthquakes felt by residents had an intensity of II-III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, meaning the tremors were felt indoors, akin to a truck passing by.

Based on the results of the BMKG analysis, the earthquake's epicenter formed a southwest-northeast trend, approximately 5-8 kilometers west of the South Garut Fault (Garsela) in the Kendang Segment and north of the Garsela Fault in the Kencana Segment.

These tremors were shallow, and tectonically related to local fault activity in the region.

"The earthquakes were not distributed within the Garsela Fault Zone in the Kendang Segment or Kencana Segment, nor the Cicalengka Fault, but rather in an unmapped area," he said.

He stated that these findings require further in-depth study to determine the source of the earthquake that triggered the series of seismic activity in Bandung Regency and its surroundings.

BMKG currently operates 35 seismic sensors spread across West Java to detect and record earthquake activity, including micro-earthquakes with small magnitudes, with a fairly good level of precision.

The agency will also continue to monitor earthquake activity and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public, while also urging residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unconfirmed reports.
