Brazilian Hiker Who Died on Mount Rinjani Was Living Her Dream Journey Across Asia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Juliana Marins, a Brazilian hiker and solo traveler, died after falling during a hike on Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The 27-year-old slipped near Cemara Nunggal and plunged toward Segara Anak Lake, which is several hundred meters deep, on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Search and rescue operations were launched shortly after the Mount Rinjani National Park Office alerted the Mataram SAR team. She was located on Monday, June 23, using thermal drone imaging, but evacuation was delayed due to treacherous terrain and thick fog.

A joint SAR team reached her body on Tuesday, June 24, at a depth of around 600 meters. The evacuation continued on Wednesday morning, June 25. Haryadi, head of the Mataram SAR Office, said her body would be carried up along the hiking trail to the Sembalun Post before being airlifted to Bhayangkara Hospital in West Nusa Tenggara.

Backpacking Journey Through Asia

Known in some media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, she was a native of Niterói in Brazil’s metropolitan region. Juliana was a publicist and pole dancer who graduated with a degree in Advertising and Publicity from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Since February 2025, she had been backpacking through Asia, having visited the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand before arriving in Indonesia, according to Goblo on Thursday, June 25. She had also shared photos of her travels on social media.

Her friend Flávia Dela Libera Vieira said backpacking had long been Juliana

’s dream. She recalled one of their last conversations about the journey.

"I am very happy for her because I knew it was something suitable for her; Brazil is not enough for someone like her," said Flávia, who met Juliana during their time at the Federal University of Uberlândia in 2016.

A Father’s Farewell

Juliana’s father, Manoel Marins, wrote an open letter to his daughter on Instagram on Wednesday, June 25. He said she had planned the trip since early this year and had insisted on funding it herself.

"And how happy we are with your happiness. You left to do what you love the most, and that somewhat consoles our hearts," Manoel wrote.

He shared memories of his daughter as a lively young woman with a radiant smile and big dreams. They had even made a promise to go paragliding together on her birthday.

"And here we will stay, confident that we will meet again someday and have the paragliding flight that we planned for your birthday. In heaven, the good Lord will provide this for us. From those who always love you: dad, mom, and Mari," he added.
