TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Uruguay's Deputy Foreign Minister, Valeria Csukasi, concluded her official visit to Indonesia from September 15–16, 2025. The visit, as stated in a press release received by Tempo on Thursday, September 18, 2025, aimed to enhance diplomatic, trade, and economic relations between the two countries. Accompanying Csukasi were Uruguay's Ambassador, Cristina González, and other embassy officials.

Focus on Food and Renewable Energy

On the first day, the Uruguayan delegation met with officials from Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment. The meeting was hosted by Bara Hasibuan, Expert Staff for Digital Transformation and Inter-Agency Relations, and Dandy Iswara, Deputy for Maritime Affairs.

The discussions focused on potential cooperation in the food sector, particularly the dairy industry. Both parties determined that this sector holds significant potential for mutually beneficial growth.

The delegation also visited the Ministry of Environment, where they were welcomed by Deputy Minister Diaz Hendropriyono. During the meeting, Csukasi highlighted Uruguay's commitment to sustainable practices.

She pointed out that Uruguay generates 98% of its electricity from renewable energy, mostly from hydroelectric power. Csukasi also added that Uruguay is a leader in green hydrogen production, a sector that could create future opportunities for collaboration with Indonesia.

Trade Initiatives

At the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Csukasi proposed strengthening trade relations through a comprehensive trade agreement.

The proposed frameworks were either an Indonesia-Uruguay Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) or a broader MERCOSUR-Indonesia CEPA. Susiwijono, the Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, welcomed the proposal and affirmed Indonesia's support for closer economic relations with Uruguay.

On the second day, the foreign ministries of both nations held their first bilateral consultation meeting. Discussions centered on boosting trade, strengthening international integration, and developing a long-term cooperation agenda. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, Uruguay also prepared several initiatives.

The visit concluded with a meeting between Csukasi and Trade Minister Budi Santoso. Minister Santoso reiterated Indonesia's support for the CEPA negotiations with MERCOSUR, the South American trade bloc of which Uruguay is a member. He emphasized that the trade relations between the two countries have great growth potential and should be reinforced through a closer economic partnership.
