TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, following reported US and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory.
The message was conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono on behalf of the Indonesian government.
According to an official statement from Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, Sugiono delivered a letter from President Prabowo to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, in Jakarta.
“I present a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey Indonesia’s deepest condolences on the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
During the meeting, Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi also discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East following US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which prompted retaliatory strikes by Tehran in the Persian Gulf.
Sugiono underscored the importance of upholding international law and the United Nations Charter, and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a series of strikes on multiple targets in Iran, including in Tehran, resulting in reported damage and civilian casualties. Iranian state television later confirmed that Khamenei had been killed in the attack.
In response, Iran carried out missile strikes targeting Israeli territory and US military facilities in the region. The escalation unfolded amid ongoing nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Geneva, mediated by Oman.
Indonesia has since called for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated its readiness to help facilitate dialogue to restore regional stability. In a separate statement on March 3, Sugiono said he had spoken by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the situation and convey Indonesia’s willingness to support mediation efforts.
