TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China's Mission to ASEAN has spoken about the United States' import tariff policies towards its trading partners, including China. China compared the U.S. policy with its own, claiming a better approach to international economic cooperation.
China stated that it plays the role of the world's second-largest economy and the second-largest consumer goods market. The country is committed to further opening up to the international world amid global changes.
In an official statement on Saturday, April 5, 2025, China's Mission to ASEAN will continue to promote high-standard openness.
Furthermore, China emphasized that it will continue to expand institutional openness in rules, regulations, management, and standards. Moreover, China is committed to implementing high-standard trade and investment liberalization and facilitation policies.
China also pledged to develop a market-oriented, law-based, world-class business environment.
In the statement, China will share its development opportunities with the world for mutual benefit.
According to China, economic globalization is the only path to progress. Additionally, China assesses that the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and a rule-based system has been crucial in promoting global trade, economic growth, and sustainable development.
The statement said openness and cooperation are historical trends. The world shall not and should not revert to isolation or fragmentation. The entire world desires mutually beneficial cooperation.
China emphasized that the international community is responsible for making economic globalization more open, inclusive, balanced, and beneficial for all.
The trade conflict triggered by the U.S. could worsen economic relations between the world's two largest economies. The United States' imposed tariffs are significant and involve almost all its trading partners, including China.
The U.S. imposes a 10 percent tariff on most imported goods, including those from China, Mexico, and Canada. However, countries with closer trade relations with the U.S. face higher tariffs. One of the countries affected is China, which is subject to a 34 percent tariff, bringing the total tariff on Chinese goods this year to 54 percent.
China did not let the U.S. tariff policy go unchallenged. They immediately took a series of retaliatory measures. Imposing a 34 percent tariff on all imports from the United States was one of the most important steps taken.
As cited by CNA Lifestyle, China also tightened exports of some rare raw materials crucial for U.S. industries, such as rare earth minerals used in high technology and electronic products.
The Chinese government views these tariff policies as unfair and detrimental to both parties. On one occasion, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that "the market has spoken," indicating that China sees it as a wrong and harmful move.
China urged the U.S. to open dialogue and seek a fairer solution to the trade issue. Some Chinese trade associations issued stern statements, reminding that the tariffs could worsen inflation in the U.S. and affect consumer purchasing power there. They also emphasized that the policy could potentially harm the already fragile global economy due to the pandemic.
This conflict potentially disrupts the world's economic stability and complicates trade resolution issues between the world's two largest economies. In dealing with these policies, China is trying to protect its economic interests while seeking alternative markets to reduce the negative impact of the U.S. tariff policy.
