TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The newly released animated film Jumbo, produced by Visinema Pictures, has just shattered records with a groundbreaking success. Since its release on March 31, the film has become the highest-grossing animated title of all time in Southeast Asia, earning an impressive US$8 million.
According to Deadline.com, Jumbo has attracted over 3.2 million viewers within just two weeks of its debut, becoming the second-highest-grossing animated film in Indonesia's box office, surpassing Moana 2.
Jumbo Global Release and Its Warm Reception from Indonesians
Jumbo’s success is set to continue with its upcoming global release in several countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam in June. This milestone marks a well-deserved achievement for the over 420 Indonesian animators and creators involved in the project, which was in development for five years since early 2020.
Reflecting on the film's warm reception in Indonesia, Anggia Kharisma, the producer of Jumbo, shared her sentiments when the film reached one million viewers: “Seeing this kind of heartfelt response from Indonesian audiences makes every challenge we’ve faced over the past five years feel incredibly meaningful.”
Synopsis of Jumbo
The film follows Don (voiced by Prince Poetiray and Den Bagus Sasono), a young boy who cherishes a fairy tale book left by his deceased parents (Ariel NOAH and Bunga Citra Lestari). After their passing, Don is raised by his grandmother, Oma (Ratna Riantiarno).
Along with his two friends, Nurman (Yusuf Ozkan) and Mae (Graciella Abigail), Don plans to participate in a talent show. However, his plan is disrupted when his book is stolen by Atta (M. Adhiyat), who envies him. The adventure continues when Don meets Meri (Quinn Salman), a girl from another world seeking help to reunite with her parents (Ariyo Wahab and Cinta Laura Kiehl).
Angga Dwimas Sasongko, the founder and Group CEO of Visinema, described that “Jumbo is my personal calling — a labor of love for my child, and for all Indonesian children who deserve to have their own choices at the cinema’s ticket box."
