TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Bank of Cuba launched new 10,000- and 20,000-peso banknotes for public circulation on Wednesday, September 16. It aims to facilitate cash transactions and align currency denominations with current economic conditions.
Central Bank of Cuba President Juana Lilia Delgado said on the television program “Mesa Redonda” that the new banknotes complement adjustments to the country's currency denominations, as ANTARA quoted.
According to Delgado, this update aims to align existing denominations with economic conditions, particularly price levels and the demand for cash circulation.
These steps are part of a phased process to modernize Cuba's banking system, expand its capacity, involve new players and technologies, and diversify financial services.
The new 10,000-peso banknote features Haydee Santamaria, a historical figure of the Cuban Revolution, while the 20,000-peso banknote features Vilma Espin, who was also associated with the Cuban revolutionary process.
In April, when the 2,000- and 5,000-peso banknotes began circulating, the central bank said the issuance was intended to facilitate cash transactions, meet the economy's need for larger amounts of cash, reduce cash-related logistics costs, and improve operational efficiency amid inflation, Delgado said.
