TEMPO.CO, DemakFloods have inundated 12 villages in Demak Regency, Central Java, since Sunday, May 18, 2025. The surge of water occurred after the embankment of the Tuntang River breached in Karangrejo and Kembangan Villages, Bonang District.

The affected areas include Ploso Village in Karangtengah District; Lempuyang Village in Wonosalam District; Sidoharjo and Trimulyo Villages in Guntur District; Mintreng Village in Kebonagung District; Karangrejo, Kembangan, Krajanbogi, and Gebangarum Villages in Bonang District; as well as Sayung and Kalisari Villages in Sayung District.

"Heavy rainfall led to a high water discharge from upstream to downstream, causing floods in several areas of Demak," said Bergas Catur Penanggungan, Head of the Central Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

According to BPBD data, 2,903 families, totaling 11,662 residents, have been affected, with 2,959 houses inundated. "Currently, six households, comprising 25 individuals, are seeking refuge," he added. They have found shelter in places of worship.

The floods have also submerged 21 public facilities, including 3 offices, 17 places of worship, 1 market, 15 schools, and 3 health facilities. Additionally, 730 hectares of agricultural land are submerged, and roads are flooded up to a height of 70 centimeters.

Efforts to repair the breached embankment are now underway, spearheaded by the Pemali-Juana River Basin Authority and the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency of Demak Regency.
