TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that his country is considering legal action over the Israeli military's brutal treatment of participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), some of whom are French citizens.
Beyond condemnation, which is necessary from a political perspective, France observed that it is necessary to act and could not rule out reporting all the actions captured in the video to legal authorities. "We cannot allow French citizens to be targeted with impunity," Lecornu said as quoted by Antara.
The video Lecornu referred to was posted by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Wednesday, May 20, which shows Israeli security forces forcing bound flotilla activists to lie face down on the floor.
Ben-Gvir himself is seen in the footage making provocative statements directed at the detainees.
The GSF subsequently reported that its activists suffered 30 cases of broken bones, accusing Israeli forces of outright violence.
Radio station FranceInfo previously reported that GSF participants plan to file lawsuits against Israel in several countries after falling victim to violence when their convoy was intercepted by Israeli forces.
On April 15, the flotilla set sail from Barcelona carrying humanitarian aid destined for the Gaza Strip. However, on May 18, the ship was surrounded and, according to the GSF, violently intercepted by Israeli military vessels in international waters, approximately 250 nautical miles off the Gaza coast.
All flotilla participants were subsequently detained and deported by Israeli authorities.
