TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Indonesian Navy Information Bureu, Commodore Tunggul, confirmed that the Italian-built aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi had entered Indonesian waters on Thursday.
"ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi has entered Indonesian waters and is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta tomorrow, Friday, September 18," Tunggul said when confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.
The ship has finally entered Indonesian waters after previously docking in Sri Lanka.
According to Tunggul, Garibaldi was escorted by Italian naval warships on its journey from Itlay.
After entering Indonesian waters, the first Indonesian aircraft carrier was welcomed by two Indonesian Navy warships and escorted to the Tanjung Priok pier in Jakarta.
Two frigates will escort the aircraft carrier: the KRI Brawijaya-320 and the KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.
Tunggul said the ship will be welcomed by high-ranking officials from the Indonesian military (TNI) and the Ministry of Defense.
Earlier, Indonesian Prabowo Subianto mandated for the Garibaldi ship to be converted into a platform for helicopters and drones to assist in combating forest fires.
According to the head of state, the ship can accommodate 10 medium-class helicopters such as the Black Hawk and MI-17. Both helicopters are estimated to be able to carry an average of 4 to 5 tons of water to assist in disaster management. "So if we have 10 helicopters, they can immediately reach the areas hardest hit by fires. This will greatly help our response," Prabowo said last week.
Some adjustments are expected to be made to accommodate this request.
