Government Speeds Up Verification of Citizenship for 53,579 Indonesians Abroad

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Legal Administrative Affairs (AHU) of the Law Ministry will expedite verifying the citizenship status of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are abroad and do not have documents. As of May 2025, 53,579 requests have been made to confirm citizenship status.

AHU Directorate General Widodo stated in a written statement on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, that these requests are scattered in several countries. In detail, there are 45,126 requests in Malaysia, 5,275 in Saudi Arabia, 2,762 in the Philippines, and 416 in Timor Leste.

Widodo said that the acceleration can be done based on the Minister of Law Regulation Number 6 of 2025, issued on February 14, 2025. The method is through collaboration with the Indonesian Representatives abroad.

He added that electronic services also enable document verification and direct interviews to be conducted by the Indonesian Representatives before being forwarded to the AHU Directorate General. This system accelerates the process and provides Indonesian citizens abroad with legal certainty. "However, there are still challenges, particularly the low level of awareness regarding documentation and the high rate of illegal migration," said Widodo.

Furthermore, with the planned lifting of the moratorium on Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) to Saudi Arabia, the AHU Directorate General is preparing a mechanism to expedite the confirmation of citizenship status to anticipate the surge in requests. This step is in line with the socialization program of citizenship documentation for PMIs to prevent the risk of identity loss. "This step supports the government's priority program, especially strengthening protection for Indonesian citizens abroad. This can have a direct, positive impact on increasing foreign exchange contributions," Widodo said.
