Indonesia Urges Calm over Citizenship Fee Adjustments

7 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas urged the public not to worry about the rising fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship and the naturalization process.

Supratman, when met at the House of Representatives (DPR) Building in Jakarta on Tuesday, said the fee hike was conducted through careful consideration as to not impact the general public directly.

"First, this government regulation had been unchanged for nearly a decade. Second, Indonesians need not be concerned about this increase in PNBP (non-tax state revenue)," he said.

The fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship has been adjusted from Rp1 million to Rp5 million, while citizenship application adjusted from Rp50 million to Rp75 million.

According to him, these adjustments were made to maintain the digital system the Ministry of Law is developing. "This tool requires maintenance, and not just for one service, we have 530 public services that must be maintained," said Supratman.

"Hopefully, the decision [to adjust the fees] does not appear as rushed," he added.

According to the minister, the wish to obtain or renounce Indonesian citizenship comes from certain social groups, meaning the tariff adjustments will have little direct impact on the general public.

"Those who wish to renounce their citizenship must have sufficient financial means, but we're not talking about who can or cannot afford it. The impact on the lower classes is almost non-existent," he said.

Regardless, the process to gain or renounce Indonesian citizenship is no easy matter, with lengthy procedures and requirements. "Those who wish to become citizens must have lived in Indonesia for five consecutive years or 10 non-consecutive years. And they must be financially capable," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding applications to renounce Indonesian citizenship, applicants must be personally reviewed by the government through 15 ministries/agencies. Not all applications are approved by the government.

"We must ensure that those wishing to renounce their citizenship have no outstanding tax obligations and are not involved in any ongoing criminal cases," he said.

The tariff adjustments are outlined under Government Regulation No. 30 of 2026 concerning non-tax state revenue under the Ministry of Law. The regulation will take effect starting August 1, 2026, the minister said.
