Indonesia Urges Meta to Shut Down Pornographic Groups

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Indonesian Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has asked the platform Meta to close pornographic groups on Facebook. Previously, Komdigi closed access to six groups containing pornographic incestuous sexual relations, which caused a sensation on social media.

The ministry encourages active collaboration between digital platforms and law enforcement to uncover the masterminds behind such groups. "In order to maintain a safe and comfortable digital space, (the ministry) has asked Meta to track similar groups so that access can be terminated," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Angga Raka Prabowo, in a written statement, Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Angga stated that the ministry has already identified several similar groups and blocked them. However, he said that this action is not enough. "I asked Meta to continue updating their data and to closely monitor the potential emergence of similar groups on their platform," he said.

He also urged Meta and other digital platform providers to cooperate actively with law enforcement. In particular, cooperation is needed to uncover the masterminds behind groups that contain content that is disturbing and contrary to social and legal norms in Indonesia. "We also urge Meta to cooperate with law enforcement in identifying and providing data on the owners and managers of these groups," he said.

Not only that, Angga also requested that those responsible for spreading such content be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. According to him, such content damages morality and endangers our children. "This is a serious crime that undermines morality and endangers our children," he said.

He also urged the public to monitor and report the potential existence of similar content groups. Angga asked the public to report through the aduankonten.id channel if they find similar content.

Prior to this, the Indonesian National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim Polri) arrested six suspects in the case of a Facebook group named Fantasi Sedarah (Incest Fantasy) and Suka Duka (Joy and Sorrow), which contained pornographic content of incest or sexual relations with family members. The six suspects are MR, DK, MS, MJ, MA, and KA, who were arrested in various locations in Java and Sumatra. "Six suspects have been arrested, some in West Java, Central Java, Lampung, and Bengkulu," said Director of Cyber Crime at Bareskrim Polri, Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji, in a press conference at his office in Jakarta, Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

He explained that the arrests were prompted by three police reports. "Three police reports prompted us to conduct investigations in various regions," he said.

Investigators seized several pieces of evidence from the six suspects. There were three Facebook accounts, five email accounts, eight mobile phones, one PC, one laptop, two identity cards, six SIM cards, and two memory cards from mobile phones. In addition, investigators also secured hundreds of photos and videos containing pornographic images of children from the suspects' devices. From MR's phone, investigators found 402 images and seven videos containing pornographic content. Meanwhile, 66 images and two videos related to the case were found on the suspect's MA. "As many as 66 images and two videos were found on the respective devices containing pornographic content," explained Himawan.

Himawan stated that the six suspects are charged with Article 45 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 27 paragraph (1) and Article 52 of the Information and Electronic Transactions Law. "The six suspects face a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and a maximum fine of Rp6 billion (approximately US$420,000)," he said.

In addition, the perpetrators are also charged under Article 81 jo. Article 76 D and/or Article 82 paragraph (1) and paragraph (2) jo. Article 76 E and Article 88 jo. Article 76 I of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection and/or Article 14 paragraph (1) letters a and b of Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence.
