Iran: Delegations from Hundreds of Countries Expected at Ali Khamenei's Funeral

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Thursday, July 2, that officials from more than 100 countries will attend the funeral ceremonies for the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In an interview with Iran's state television station IRIB TV, citing ANTARA, Baghaei said the foreign guests included heads of state, parliament speakers, foreign ministers, special government envoys, and many prominent figures and community groups.

Baghaei said the series of farewell ceremonies and funeral of the late Iranian leader were "historic and very important" events for the Iranian people.

He announced that a series of tribute and farewell ceremonies would begin in Tehran on Friday morning, July 3, local time. Various dignitaries and community groups are expected to attend. The events would then continue in the afternoon with the presence of high-ranking foreign officials and political figures from various countries.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 30, Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, Iran's Interior Deputy Minister and head of the funeral organizing headquarters, said that after Friday's ceremony, farewell processions will be held at the Mosalla Imam Khomeini prayer hall in Tehran on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, the funeral procession is scheduled for Monday and is expected to draw large crowds from Iran and other nearby countries.

On Tuesday, a ceremony will be held in the central Iranian city of Qom, and on Wednesday, Ali Khamenei's body will be transferred to Iraq for further ceremonies. He will be buried in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad on Thursday, Pourjamshidian added.

Iranian authorities have announced the closure of various public services in Tehran from Saturday to Tuesday to facilitate the ceremonies. The government has also declared Thursday a day of national mourning.

Ali Khamenei was killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack on Tehran on February 28. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was elected Iran's new supreme leader in March.
