TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States national team became the second side to qualify for the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 in their second Group D match at Seattle Stadium on Saturday, Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The Americans' two goals in the match were courtesy of a Cameron Burgess own goal in the 11th minute and an Alex Freeman strike just before halftime in the 43rd. This result marked the US's second consecutive victory at the tournament, following their 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay in their opening match.
The US now sits atop Group D with six points, establishing a three-point cushion over second- and third-placed Australia and Paraguay. This victory secured Mauricio Pochettino's squad a place in the Round of 32, following co-hosts Mexico, who also advanced after winning both of their opening matches.
In Group C, Brazil claimed the top spot with four points after securing their first win of the campaign by dismantling Haiti 3-0 at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday.
A brace from Manchester United striker Matheus Cunha (23', 36') and a stoppage-time goal from Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior (45'+3') put the Seleção in prime position to advance to the knockout stage as either group winners or runners-up.
In the group's other match, Morocco also secured a vital victory, edging past Scotland 1-0 at Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Saturday, thanks to an early goal from Ismael Saibari in the 2nd minute.
This win places Morocco second in the group with four points, trailing Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil only on goal difference, while Scotland sits in third with three points.
With such narrow margins separating the top three teams in Group C, the knockout stage berths will come down to the final group fixtures on Thursday morning, June 25, WIB, when Morocco faces Haiti at Atlanta Stadium and Scotland takes on Brazil at Miami Stadium.
Meanwhile, Haiti and Turkey have seen their World Cup campaigns come to an early end after suffering two defeats in as many matches.
