TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy forced a U.S. tanker to turn around near the Strait of Hormuz after it tried to pass through with its radar system turned off, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported early on Thursday.
Citing a military source familiar with the information, as quoted by ANTARA, Tasnim said the IRGC naval forces responded quickly to the vessel and fired warning shots at it, forcing it to retreat.
Tasnim linked the incident to an explosion heard earlier near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, where Iranian media reported that air defenses had been activated. The news agency said the incident did not result in any casualties or property damage.
The report came as a U.S. official confirmed to Anadolu new agency that the U.S. carried out another round of airstrikes in southern Iran, shooting down four Iranian single-track attack drones that posed a threat near the Strait of Hormuz.
"U.S. forces also struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone," the official said, on condition of anonymity, on Wednesday (27/5).
"These actions were measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire," the official added.
Regional tensions have escalated since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February. Tehran retaliated with attacks targeting Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation and was later extended indefinitely by U.S. President Donald Trump.
