Love, Justice, Peace: 4 Takeaways from Pope Leo XIV's Inaugural Speech

6 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During his inauguration ceremony at Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Pope Leo XIV delivered a series of significant messages. Addressing global leaders and prominent figures, his remarks were broadcast widely around the world.

1. A Call for Love and Unity

In his sermon, Pope Leo XIV urged both the Church and the global community to embrace "love and unity."

"In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest," he said, as quoted by News Week.

He also underscored the value of embracing diversity.

"This is the missionary spirit that must animate us, not closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the world," he added.

2. Critique of an Exploitative Economic System

Pope Leo XIV reiterated his concern over economic structures that harm both people and the planet.

"In our time, there are still too many divisions and wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, fear of differences, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest people," he said, echoing one of his central themes.

3. Rejection of Religious Propaganda

He firmly stated that the Catholic Church must steer clear of "religious propaganda" and internal power struggles. Instead, he stressed unity—likely a nod to the tensions that arose between reformist and conservative groups under Pope Francis.

Drawing from his extensive missionary background in Peru, he also cautioned against isolation within religious communities.

4. Attention to Global Conflicts

Pope Leo XIV addressed ongoing global crises, mentioning the suffering in Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine. He called on the world not to turn away from those affected by war.

"The martyred Ukraine is waiting for negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen," he said, as quoted by CNN.
