TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 6.7 tectonic earthquake struck the Palu region in Central Sulawesi on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 10:27:44 AM WIB, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
Authorities confirmed that the quake has no tsunami potential.
“Modeling results indicate that this earthquake is not tsunamigenic. As of 10:46 WIB, BMKG monitoring has not shown any aftershock earthquake activity,” BMKG said in a preliminary statement via its official YouTube channel.
BMKG reported that the epicenter was located at 1.03° South Latitude and 120.24° East Longitude, or about 42 km southeast of Palu, at a shallow depth of 10 km. Based on its characteristics, the quake is classified as a shallow earthquake triggered by active fault movement.
The agency added that the source mechanism showed an oblique normal fault, indicating a combined downward and lateral slip.
Shaking was strongly felt in several areas, with intensity reaching level 6–7 MMI in Torue and Parigi Moutong, as well as South Parigi. In Palolo and Sigi, intensity reached 7 MMI. Meanwhile, Palu City and Biromaru recorded 5–6 MMI, while Poso, Donggala, and Pasangkayu experienced weaker shaking at 4–5 MMI.
“So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the tectonic earthquake,” BMKG said.
The agency urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, stressing that official updates are only available through BMKG’s verified communication channels, including its website and social media accounts.
