May 20 App Shutdown: Gojek, Grab, and Maxim Claim Not to Have Violated Rules

3 hours ago 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Providers of online transportation services Gojek, Grab, and Maxim have jointly denied allegations made by the motorcycle taxi drivers' association regarding violations of the rule on cuts in commission exceeding 20 percent.

Gojek Indonesia President Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo stated that Gojek employs an 80:20 formula for each trip cost. This means that 80 percent goes to the motorcycle taxi drivers and 20 percent goes to Gojek as a deduction for the service provider.

"The commission cut is in accordance with the Minister of Transportation's Regulation : 15+15," stated Catherine during a meeting with the Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Chief of Public Affairs Grab Indonesia, Tirza R Munusamy, conveyed a similar message. She claims that Grab always complies with regulations and never cuts the motorcycle taxi fares by more than 20 percent. She also explained that the 20 percent commission is used for technological development.

Furthermore, it is used for safety through financing insurance for both driver partners and passengers. Other uses include operational support programs for motorcycle taxi drivers. "For example, oil changes, tire repairs. To lighten the burden of driver partners in their daily lives," said Tirza.

Government Relations Specialist Maxim Indonesia, Muhammad Rafi Assagaf, also stated that Maxim complies with the government regulations that stipulate a maximum 20 percent cut in motorcycle taxi fares. He said that the commission cut is necessary because the service providers need to innovate and develop technology. According to him, this development is aimed at improving the welfare of motorcycle taxi driver partners.

Rafi disagreed with the demands of the motorcycle taxi drivers' association to reduce the fare cut to 10 percent. "This would have a significant impact on the online transportation ecosystem because it would make innovation difficult," Rafi said. He also claimed that millions of driver partners have placed their livelihoods on the online transportation service application.

In line with these demands, the motorcycle taxi association will hold a protest on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Chairperson of the Indonesian Public Transportation Workers Union (SPAI) Lily Pujiati stated that the demonstration is being held because the service providers cut the motorcycle taxi fares in excess of the 20 percent government rule.

She stated that the excessive cuts worsen the welfare conditions of motorcycle taxi drivers. "The platform's cut reaches 70 percent. The drivers receive Rp5,200 while customers pay Rp18,000 for food delivery," she said in a written statement on Monday, May 19, 2025.

Previously, the General Chairperson of Garda Indonesia Igun Wicaksono stated that the demonstration will be joined by thousands of motorcycle taxi drivers from various regions, such as East Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Cirebon, Bandung, Cikampek, Karawang, Greater Banten, Palembang, and Lampung. The demonstration will be concentrated in Merdeka Palace, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Indonesian Parliament (DPR RI). He stated that similar demonstrations will also be conducted simultaneously in other cities.

"Garda hopes that the government will not remain silent in the face of the disappointment of motorcycle taxi and online taxi drivers who have long endured the violation of regulations by the service providers," said Igun in a written statement on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

In addition to the demonstration, Igun stated that Garda Indonesia and other motorcycle taxi associations will ensure a mass application or offbid shutdown. Therefore, on May 20, 2025, all bookings through the application will be disabled. "We hope the public will understand this offbid action as a lesson for the regulation-violating service providers," he said.
