TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nusa Tenggara Volcano Monitoring and Landslide Mitigation Agency (PGMBG) said the volcanic activity at the famed hiking destination Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has remained at alert level II since 2015.
The Head of the Nusa Tenggara PGMBG, Juliana Runambi, stated that the alert status has been in place for quite some time, approximately 11 years.
"We urge hikers and the surrounding communities near Mount Rinjani to always heed our hazard warning, which is 1.5 kilometers from the crater center, currently at Mount Barujari," said the head of Nusa Tenggara PGMBG, in Mataram on Monday.
Mount Rinjani, a 3,726-meter-high volcano under the Nusa Tenggara PGMBG's supervision range, is located in three administrative regions: East Lombok, Central Lombok, and North Lombok.
Juliana urged hikers to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for hiking established by the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) Agency.
According to Juliana, compliance with hazard advice and hiking SOPs is crucial for maintaining safety during activities in the Mount Rinjani area.
Mount Rinjani serves as a major tourist destination in Lombok Island, frequently visited by both domestic and international tourists.
According to a report from the Geological Agency, the volcano's activity has been recorded since the 19th century, with records including eruptions and increased solfatara activity centered on Mount Barujari.
Starting September 1, 2026, hiking tours to the Mount Rinjani area have been open on a limited basis to prevent fires due to the prolonged dry season.
The TNGR Center stated that online booking services through the eRinjani application have been temporarily suspended until fire risks ease.
