TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The legal team of former Indonesian education minister Nadiem Makarim explained their absence from the trial over an alleged corruption case involving Chromebook laptop procurement at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, which led to the hearing being postponed.
Ari Yusuf Amir, Nadiem's lawyer, said they had already informed the panel of judges of their disagreement with the presence of witnesses and experts at the trial on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. "Because we will not be able to have them present, as it is scheduled for next Monday," he said in a press conference in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta.
In addition, another reason is due to the health condition of Nadiem Makarim. Ari said his client was feeling extremely weak today and was unable to perform any activities. However, Nadiem was still forced to attend the trial.
"The judge directly saw his condition, and a doctor from the prosecutor's office explained that Nadiem is indeed truly sick, not pretending. So today's trial was postponed because Nadiem is ill," Ari said.
Previously, the panel of judges in the Jakarta Corruption Court had to postpone the continued trial which included the examination of mitigating witnesses from the defendant's side. Based on Tempo's observation in the courtroom, there was no one sitting at the defense table until the presiding judge, Purwanto S. Abdullah, opened the trial.
"Well, today was scheduled for the opportunity for the defendant or the lawyer to present witnesses or experts. So far, no one has appeared in the court, right?" Purwanto said in the courtroom.
The prosecutor also mentioned that Nadiem was in the detention room. "The defendant is in the detention room, but none of his lawyers are present," said public prosecutor Roy Riady.
Although Nadiem had appeared in the Jakarta Corruption Court, according to Roy, he was in a sick condition. After consulting in the courtroom, the panel of judges decided to postpone the trial until Monday, April 27, 2026.
